“Identity-Zhongshan Zhuang” is the result of the East-West collaboration between music producer Victor Cheng and Hollywood composer Michael Gordon Shapiro. The three-movement symphonic piece embodies the spirit and emotion of the difficulties countless Chinese families have overcome during the past hundred years. It honors the strength it takes to maintain one’s cultural identity in the face of adversity, and the universal struggle to move forward when everything one loves has been left behind.
To celebrate this fresh new concerto, rising conducting star Maestro Case Scaglione and his renowned Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra team up with the Beijing-based guzheng virtuoso Chang Su to deliver a breathtaking blend of extraordinary Asian and Western music. Now in its 55th year, the Debut Orchestra brings a history of more than 41 world premieres and a rich Western Classical foundation to complement the Chinese heritage and whirlwind skill of Chang Su. Together Scaglione, Su and the 75 orchestra members pour their passion into the very touching and unique Identity concerto.
This memorable evening of intercultural music will also include several guzheng solos by Chang Su and the YMF Debut Orchestra's performance of Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser.
